node.js is a platform built on the Chrome Javascript runtime engine. It uses a non-blocking, event-driven I/O model and uses the Javascript programming language. It comes with a standard set of pacakges to make life easier.

  • All code is written in Javascript.
  • All lines of code outside of any function are executed sequentially when the script is first run.
  • Functions are run only when they are called.

A Simple HTTP Server

This is one of the most common Node.js examples:

This will respond with the text NodeJs says hi. It may respond with the message twice, as some browsers (e.g. Chrome) also put in a separate HTTP request for favicon.ico. The function passed into createServer() gets called when the request event fires. If you want to know more about the http object methods, see the API reference.

A simple way to stop this from happening is to investigate the req variable.

This handles favicon requests differently from standard requests.

Checking To See If There Is An Internet Connection

A quick and dirty way to check if there is internet connectivity is to use the code:

This checks to see if it can resolve Google’s named internet address into a numerical address with a DNS server. If there is no connection, this will timeout after about 10s or so and execute any code under if(err). There is no way of changing the timeout time by passing a value through in the function, but you can roll your own custom timeout function.

npm is the node package manager. You can install it by typing:

Node packages are installed locally (in the current directory) with the following npm syntax

They are installed globally by adding the -g flag:

Local packages are installed in the current directory under ./node_modules/.

A giant list of node modules can be found at You can print a list of all installed modules with the command npm -ls.

RaspberryPi GPIO

Make sure you start the nodejs script with admin privlages ( sudo node myScript.js), otherwise you won’t be able to control the GPIO (you will get an error similar to).

Packages I Have Found Useful
